April 2008 Interviewer: Good morning Penny. The loopweaver: Good morning. Interviewer: Why are you called The Loopweaver? The loopweaver: Because it’s what I do. Interviewer: So what exactly is loopweaving? The loopweaver: It’s partially crocheting, partially weaving and a whole lot of creativity. Interviewer: Why don't you just call what you do crocheting and use the crochet terminology in your written patterns? It seems to me you're tryng to reinvent the wheel. It's still crocheting isn't it? The loopweaver: It would certainly seem so. I've been an artist most of my life. To me Loopweaving isn't so much about the stitch as it is about creating forms and the blending of colors and textures and weaves to create something new and beautiful. Interviewer: So how does that make loopweaving different? The loopweaver: The simple manner in which the loops are worked. Although you do make a chain in the beginning, and you do work the yarn similar to that of the slip stitch, no other crochet stitches are used. In loopweaving there is more emphasis on the variety of ways you weave the single loop of multiple strands of yarn. Interviewer: So what you're saying is the terminology for crocheting didn't work. The loopweaver: Yes that is correct. Interviewer: It sounds like you spend a great deal of time loopweaving. The loopweaver: I do. There is just so much creativity involved. It's fun. Interviewer: I am curious. How do you get the yarn baskets and soft pots to retain their shape? The loopweaver: Working with multiple strands of yarn makes the weave tighter. However most baskets or containers made from yarn are still "soft" to the touch so there is some molding required with your hands to reposition the sides of the container so they are perfectly round. Or molding the "ruffles as you would mold the edges of a pie crust and so on. Interviewer: What's the best part of all this for you? The loopweaver: My sisters and I feel like we're connecting with people around the world in a very positive and creative way. Each day that passes we hear from people from so many different countries. It's a great feeling. Interviewer: It looks like Loopweaving is becoming very popular. Where do you go from here? The loopweaver: Me personally? I’ll continue creating new designs and trying to improve the learning experience of Loopweaving for all those who want to learn. I guess what I’m hoping is that people everywhere will embrace loopweaving as the young and exciting new craft that it is and work with me to make it better. |
